In Washington State, the relationship between magic mushrooms and the local culture is complex. Historically, the Pacific Northwest has been home to various indigenous communities who have used magic mushrooms in their spiritual and healing practices. More recently, Washington State has seen a growing interest in the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms. Although the possession and cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms are currently illegal under Washington State law, there have been movements advocating for decriminalization or legalization for medical purposes, reflecting a shifting perspective on these powerful and enigmatic fungi. And several cities, including Seattle have passed decriminalization measures.
Lord of Spore supports sacred mushroom education, microscopy, taxonomy, research, and sincere religious study. Mushroom spores and mature psilocybin mushrooms may be treated differently under state, local, and federal law, including religious-freedom protections.

Washington currently classifies psilocybin and psilocyn as Schedule I under RCW 69.50.204. Outside any narrow exception described below, state law does not authorize general adult possession, sale, manufacture, or personal cultivation.
RCW Chapter 19.410 authorizes a limited University of Washington psilocybin therapy-services pilot operating through federal research pathways. It does not legalize general possession, sale, or cultivation.

Washington’s controlled-substance law names psilocybin and psilocyn, not spores as such. The current fifty-state survey identifies California, Florida, Georgia, and Idaho as the states with specific restrictions on spores capable of producing psilocybin mushrooms. Published chemical analysis detected no tryptamines in P. cubensis basidiospores.
This distinction is not a blanket safe harbor. Germination or cultivation, material containing a controlled substance, intended use, local ordinances, paraphernalia law, and other facts may affect legal treatment. Washington does not have a generally applicable state RFRA in the 2026 state-law dataset. Religious exercise remains protected by the United States and Washington constitutions, but federal RFRA generally governs federal rather than state or local government action.
Constitutional claims and defenses are fact-specific and do not automatically exempt controlled-substance conduct. Source: 2026 state religious-liberty dataset. Reviewed August 22, 2026.
